Where to start? L.A Noire was one of the most anticipated games of 2011.
Whether that was because of the new tech invlolved, the innovation, or
just the fact that it's a Rockstar game it lives up to the hype.
You play as Cole Phelps, a war hero who's now joined the LAPD. The main
objective of the game is to solve various cases around Team Bondi's
beautiful recreation of 1940s Los Angelos. As you solve cases you
eventually increase in rank and move onto more difficult cases. The
innovative features brought in sit along side this nicely. When
interrogating a suspect, their life like facial expressions will tell
you if they're lying. All this is wrapped up in a well presented
package. Everything in this game looks and sounds great. As you drive down
streets you'll marvel at the textures of the road and cars. The voice acting
is great, even if after playing for a few hours you'll hear the same
phrases repeated over and over. Genearlly though the sound and
graphics are great.
The controls, whilst slightly clunky are not too bad. Driving feels
good, but shooting feels sluggish. Throughout the game you will be
driving, shooting, chasing, searching, and interrogating. Most of
these work well. The action scenes however feel like they're tacked on to stop the game being completely boring. Gunfights and car chases are also few and far between. Some cases also seem repetitive. Go to crime scene, search for clues, interrogate main suspects, confront the criminal, chase and catch him. Most cases feel fresh however, but still lack action. In terms of play time you're looking at a good 30 hours to complete all the cases, and then there's still street crimes to complete, film reels, landmarks, and cars to find. Apart from that though the only thing to do is explore. Compared to RDR which had challenges, minigames, jobs, treasure maps, and other stuff to do, L.A Noire seems to be lacking in content.
Pros
30-40 hours of cases to complete
Great graphics and audio
A good story
One of the most innovative games this generation
Decent controls
It's like playing a movie
Cons
Not enough extras so almost no replayabilty
Too easy, and no consequences for doing a case wrong
Contols are sometimes clunky
There are some graphical hiccups in cutscenes- faces can be jerky and I've had textures load halfway through cutscenes. This could be easily patched though
Action scenes seem like an afterthought
Cases can be repetitive
Final Verdict 8/10
You should get this game if you already have RDR. If you don't though, buy that. It's cheaper and has more content.
